NEW for 2020, a saxophone workshop with Rob Buckland, head of saxophone at the prestigious Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM). We welcome Rob Buckland to JazzSmart in 2020, for what promises to be a fantastic weekend of learning all about the saxophone. Sponsored by Henry Selmer Paris. There will be sessions on:
- Saxophone ensemble playing
- Core technique – a chance to go back and ask those fundamental questions
- Exploring how the saxophone works, and how humans work, and how to combine the two efficiently
- Jazz Technique for the Classically trained player
- Building a practice routine to achieve constant results
- Discussions around the psychology of practice and performance
“I am really looking forward to working with the Jazz Smart team presenting this weekend of workshops. Regardless of previous ability or experience, we will explore the mechanics of good saxophonic practice, from the technical fundamentals that are so frequently overlooked, to combining techniques to add levels of sophistication to your playing, build confidence and trust in your technique, and look at ways to move your playing on to the next level. Bring and open mind and a note book!!” Rob Buckland
Spend a weekend with Rob Buckland, author of Playing the Saxophone, an in-depth book on the saxophone. The central ethos of the book is based around an incredibly detailed analysis of the complex combinations of many many techniques involved in playing Just One Note, designed to open your mind and ears to the incredible diversity of sounds available to the open-minded and forward thinking saxophonist.
5 years in the writing, developed over 15 years of teaching at the RNCM in Manchester, and over a quarter of a century working as a professional Saxophonist in a wide variety of settings, from Concerto and Recital soloist to member of the Apollo Saxophone Quartet and my Equivox Trio, working with some of the UK’s finest orchestras, playing with bands such as the Michael Nyman Band & SaxAssault and recording many film and TV soundtracks, this book has been designed for the serious Saxophonist, who wants to bring their playing to the very highest level.
