Jazz Improvisation Workshop, 23rd and 24th May 2020

We have an exciting two day jazz improvisation workshop on 23rd and 24th May 2020. Open to various instruments, ages and ability, we look forward to seeing you! There is the opportunity to have beginner, intermediate and advanced sessions using the qualified tutors available. If you play drums, keys, bass, guitar, saxophone, flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone; come and along and learn all about jazz, its roots, its conceptions and play in various band configurations.
Whether you have questions on how to play the blues, mastering ii-V-I progressions, or how to play over Giant Steps, this is the workshop for you!
Come and learn, play and perform jazz in a purpose built music school with knowledgeable, caring and passionate tutors.
Open to all levels, whether you’ve never played jazz before to those of you looking at honing your existing skills.
Dan Mar-Molinero – Dan is a South Coast based Saxophonist and Teacher, recognised nationally for his compositions and arrangements. He has extensive experience of live and studio playing in both jazz and commercial music and has performed with many leading musicians from across genres including Julian Joseph, Kenny Wheeler and Corrine Bailey-Rae. Dan is an accomplished conductor with many years of experience leading jazz and modern music ensembles.
He has worked with professional groups whilst also establishing himself as nationally renowned director of youth jazz ensembles. Along with numerous talented ensembles, Dan has worked with a plethora of top class musicians including Soweto Kinch, Omar Lyefook and Kairos 4Tet. He has developed a national reputation for arranging, especially for jazz ensembles. His arrangements have been played by numerous different ensembles, from leading professional groups to school bands. He has had the privilege of arranging music for some of the leading jazz musicians in the UK including Courtney Pine, Ian Shaw and Portico Quartet.
James Rawlinson – Dorset & Hampshire based Saxophonist James plays sax, clarinet and flute, and is an established educator with a career spanning 30 years. James teaches at various schools in the south and set up JazzSmart more than 10 years ago with the idea of bringing conservatoire level tuition to those who wouldn’t otherwise be able to access it. This has allowed adults and children alike of all different levels and abilities the opportunity to benefit from the teachings of some of the U.K.s finest teachers and specialists. James also run The Red Fez Orchestra which specialises in jazz music from the 1920s – 40s. The 11 piece dance band can be spotted at many of the retro festivals in the UK. www.redfezorchestra.com
Andrew Blee – Andrew has been studying and playing saxophone for the last 10 years, earning himself a Bmus in Jazz Performance at The University of Chichester, followed by an MMus at The University of Southampton. Andrew has studied with both James and Dan. Andrew spends his time teaching privately as well as for local independent music schools. When Andrew isn’t teaching he gigs regularly, in particular with The Red Fez Orchestra, Forza Saxophone Quartet and The Grand Central jazz trio. A passionate educator, Andrew can help guide the beginners in understanding the wild journey of jazz, as well as help the saxophonists with any questions they may have about playing the saxophone!
