James Rawlinson Dance Band Weekend

James Rawlinson Dance Band Weekend – 27th /28th August 2022

Durlston Court School, Barton on Sea, Hampshire.

James Rawlinson from the Red Fez Orchestra will lead a two day dance band weekend introducing charts that have been performed and recorded with the RFO. He will be joined by Andrew Blee who plays tenor saxophone with the band. Amazing opportunity – this will be a one on a part course, and participation will be after agreement with JazzSmart. This is due to the requirement of a certain sight-reading level and to prevent participants being overwhelmed in this particular workshop. It is ideal for players with some existing big band or dance band experience who want to sharpen their skills.

Charts will be picked from 1920s, 30s and 40s repertoire and will feature a wide range of styles. If you’ve ever fancied playing the Charleston, Black Bottom Stomp, Hairy Joes Jump, not to mention many more, then this is for you! Alto Saxophonists will require some clarinet ability or at least own a soprano sax as the Alto parts will double between instruments.

Places available for:

2 x alto sax (and can play clarinet or soprano sax) SOLD OUT
2 x tenor sax (1 space booked)
1 x bari sax
4 x trumpet (1 space booked)
4 x trombone (1 space booked)

James Rawlinson began playing the clarinet at school and soon found a passion for the instrument. Inspired by local teacher and multi-woodwind legend Alan Melly, he soon began to play saxophone and flute. Over the years James has been involved with many musical ventures including being a founding member of the Swing Unlimited Group, JazzSmart, The Regular Joes, The Boogie Bumpers, Forza Saxophone Quartet, Tuesday Night Sax Orchestra and others. He plays with his own quartet as well as for other bands as well as teaching clarinet, saxophone & flute in local schools and in his private studio in Bournemouth. He has seen many of his pupils go on to top music colleges in the U.K. and continues to try and inspire a new generation of young musicians.
