June 15th &16th 2019 saw two JazzSmart Workshops running side by side at Chichester University. Mike Hall returned to run a fantastic jazz improvisation workshop and James Rawlinson lead a Saxophone Ensemble workshop. Everyone had a great time, including a meal and blues night in Chichester on the Saturday evening.
The ensemble played a mixture of classical and jazz repertoire including Pedro Iturralde’s Suite Hellenique which was a real challenge! Mike covered various jazz standards and showed the course participants how to begin to navigate through the world of jazz improvisation. A big thanks to Chichester University, Vandoren and Yanagisawa Saxophones for sponsoring the event.
We were very privileged to have saxophonist Bob Reynolds lead a masterclass for us in Southampton in April. Bob brought a wealth of experience and wisdom and imparted this so eloquently to a room of very eager saxophonists.
Bob discussed in brief his 7 T Practice Pyramid, a system on how to divide your practice time. He talked about the industry, how to be an artist, his gigging with Snarky Puppy and John Mayer, some funny stories on life on the road, and how to interact and communicate when playing with a band. In fact he crammed a lot of things into the day we had Bob with us. We look forward to seeing you again soon Bob.
Music Technology & Performance 3 Day Workshop.
We had a blast on August 10th -12th. Friday saw everyone getting to know each other and performing as a group. We had a great mixture of ages and abilities with one course member having travelled from Tasmania to take part! Not sure anyone will beat that record again… The remainder of the course was spent playing and recording. All members of the course went away understanding how to use P.A., microphones, monitors and many facets of multitrack recording.
A big thank you must go to Red Triangle productions for giving us a tour of their studio. Very impressive. Also thanks to Sontronics for use of some very nice microphones. Sontronics is based in Poole, Dorset and we can highly recommend their products!
We will be running this course again next year as the tutors enjoyed it just as much as the attendees!
We are already half way through 2018 and have seen some great courses lead by Andy Scott, Mike Hall & Dan Mar-Molinero. Check the previous workshops tab for more details.
We still have 2 courses left for 2018 – Technology & Performance with James Rawlinson and Geoff Westgate in August and Derek Nash will be with us in October. Andy Scott will also be back in February 2019 for the 3rd year at The Manchester College. There are plans formulating for the rest of 2019, details of which will hit the website soon. We have listened to what you want and hopefully you will be as excited about the new courses as we are.
We had a fantastic weekend on the 17th & 18th February 2018 with Andy Scott at The Manchester College. 14 saxophonists, 3 tutors, loads of music, tea, coffee and biscuits! Andy brought some of his arrangements along for us to play as a massed ensemble and we were joined by a great rhythm section on Sunday afternoon. Each day was split into 4 sessions ; massed ensemble, beginner and intermediate jazz improvisation, classical technique and quartet playing.
Saturday night saw us venture into Chinatown for a meal during the Chinese New Year celebrations. Lunchtimes were spent in a very nice cafe “Chez” round the corner from Manchester College. Diets begin today!
This is the second year that we have run this course and we are pleased to announce the course will return next year on 16th & 17th February 2019! Watch the website for more details of how to book.
We have launched something new for 2018. Ever wanted to play jazz and don’t know where to start? Then this is for you. Whether you’re completely new to jazz or just want to improve your basic skills then come along to our quarterly introduction to jazz and improvisation workshops. Run by James Rawlinson this workshop promises to demystify how and what to play over well known jazz standards. To read more and to book please click here.
2017 has signalled the start of something new for JazzSmart; we have moved out an about around the country with our first workshop outing in Manchester. We were based at Manchester College (Shena Simon Campus) which was perfect with its array of live rooms and equipment. The two day workshop consisted of large ensemble playing and sax quartets. Andy tried his hardest to test our abilities and this for me culminated in a very interesting composition named “Seethe”. More difficult rhythms than this are yet to be invented! We will be continuing to move around the country and test the water with our next non Bournemouth area course in Chichester. More details here
We had a mixture of ages and abilities attending the course and one player travelled from Hong Kong to participate. It was also great to see Kerry from Yanagisawa Saxophones and Vandoren UK who let us use and try out the new Yanagisawa series from Soprano to Baritone. We hope to run this course around the same time next year, watch the website for more details. A big thanks goes to Andy Scott for his inspirational words teaching and to Manchester College for the use of their facilities.
Yet another fantastic workshop with a great bunch of Saxophone players, and one Clarinetist, who was as equally nice 😉 Great solos were played, great advice and wisdom was handed out by Mike Hall who seems to bring something new to each session he does for us. We had a blast (literally) at the Jam Session in The Ship Pub in Christchurch and will be repeating it on Saturday July 30th for the Andy Scott Workshop. Thanks to all who attended, hope to see you again soon!
Another great two-day session with Mike Hall! Mike focussed on improvisation and all that goes with it. Inspirational, educational and fun. Great to see some repeat attendees who were anxious about taking the leap into improvised music finally cast out those demons and go for it! Mike will be back in June (4th & 5th) for more of the same.
We were very excited to have Krzysztof Urbanski along for a days jazz masterclass / clinic and workshop on Saturday 13th February. What a talented and humble chap he is! He had so much wisdom and experience to share and we were left at the end of the day wanting more. We strongly advise you to check him out online and buy his album and hope to have Krzysztof back soon for a 2 day course. Watch this space for more details and join the mailing list.
