Multiple award winner Jazz Saxophonist Krzysztof Urbanski has been hailed as “one of the best in his generation” by the likes of Herbie Hancock and Wayne Shorter, taking 1st place in World saxophone competitions as far flung as Taiwan, as well as 1st place in the Keilwerth Sax Idol competition in Chicago, USA. After we attended a short masterclass recently at the RNCM with Krzysztof we were so blown away with his thoughts and playing in relation to sound, technique and improvisation we knew we had to host a masterclass here at JazzSmart. We honestly think this will be so inspirational to be life changing to your playing.
We are pleased to announce the third of our workshops for 2015, the return of the Pop Big Band! After last years success, and the feel good factor still being felt many months on, this workshop is being run on half term week, the 26th and 27th October. More details can be found here.
“Thank you to all at JazzSmart and Mike for a brilliant weekend. I went to my jazz class for beginners last night and used tools that I took from this weekend. I played into some chord changes and it has opened up my playing.” – some kind words from Gareth who attended the workshop. We all had a great weekend with Mike at the helm. Special thanks goes to our rhythm section – John Belben (Guitar), James Stead (Piano), Peter Mundy (Drums) who provided a great backing for the students to do their thing to. It was also great to see Griff from DG Music and Jonathan Myall who brought lots of lovely saxophones and goodies for us to drool over.
We hope to have Mike back very soon. Watch this space.
We can announce that on Mike Hall’s improvisation workshop in April we have one of the South’s leading instrument repairers on hand – David Griffiths, known to his friends as Griff. Griff will be attending Saturday, and subject to demand Sunday too. He will be available to give on the spot inspections of your saxophone, flute or clarinet. On a first come first served basis Griff can also book you in for a service or do work while you attend the workshop (please note: Griff will discuss charges with you before commencing any work).
We are pleased to announce that a Jam Session has been organised for the first evening of the Mike Hall Improvisation Course on Saturday 18th April 2015. The informal jam session will be held at The Rydal Arms in New Milton, Hampshire, just round the corner from The Coda Music Trust where the daytime course is being held. The pub has a great room which we have used before for this very purpose and everyone is welcome along, there is no charge for entry. This session will give all the course members a chance to try out some of the things they have learnt on the course in their first day. Having said that, everyone and anyone are welcome along with partners, significant others, Aunties, Mums, Saxes, Pianists, Bass Players, Guitarists, Drummers etc. We look forward to seeing all budding Jazzers there!
