Mike Hall 2015

Mike Hall Jazz saxophone improvisation workshop

New for 2015:

Mike Hall Jazz saxophone, flute and clarinet improvisation workshop – On April 18th and 19th we have Mike Hall, head of Jazz Studies and saxophone tutor at one of the UK’s leading conservatoires, the Royal Northern College of Music (RNCM), for a two day workshop on improvisation. Mike will be bringing with him his tried and tested programme on learning how to improvise effectively. Handouts are given with simple clear notes and examples to ensure students can understand improvisational methods and techniques with Mike’s various arrangements.

Mike Hall is a jazz saxophonist and educator based in Manchester, UK. He began his musical career with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra which led to work with the late composer/pianist Michael Garrick with whom he toured Malaysia and made several CD recordings and Radio 3 broadcasts.

Mike plays with the Echoes of Ellington Orchestra (including a recent week at Ronnie Scott’s Club), with Andy Scott’s Sax Assault and with his own jazz quartet. He regularly freelances with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Halle Orchestras with guest conductors such as John Wilson. Other personal projects include his double quartet (string quartet plus jazz quartet) Quadratus.

STOP PRESS – NEW FOR 2015 – We are pleased to welcome on board Jonathan Myall music, who will be attending one of the days, bringing with them an assortment of mouthpieces, reeds, stands, straps, saxophones, flutes and clarinets for course attendees to try in breaks and at lunch time. We can advise and help on setups in general, all of the JazzSmart staff are very knowledgeable with all things saxophone related including the common ‘which mouthpiece?’ question!

STOP PRESS – NEW FOR 2015 – We are also pleased to welcome Dave Griffiths (Griff) for free on the spot instrument checks, and we will operate a book in system for course attendees wanting their instruments adjusted/serviced – first come first served. Please note: Griff will discuss with you your requirements and charges for any undertaken work.
